Mobility Dogs working in the community

  • The Trust placed its first Mobility Dog with a client in 2005. Since then it has placed 50 Mobility Dogs and has a further 25 at various stages of training.

  • In 2011 the Trust placed its first Mobility Dog with a child. Due to the success of this programme, the Trust is now moving forward with other placements with children.

  • In 2014 the Trust introduce a new programme 'Puppies with People' the aim of which is to have more Mobility Dogs in the community in a variety of settings: assistance with reading in schools, residential care facilities, rest homes and more.

  • In 2015 as a result of an internal audit and academic research the Trust formally recognised the need to also provide dogs primarily acknowledging psycho-social benefits of a Mobility Dog

Puppies in prison

In partnership with the Department of Corrrections, the Trust operates two prison programmes at Auckland Regional Women's Correctional Facility, Wiri, Auckland, and, at the men's prison at Spring Hill Corrections Facility, Waikato, Auckland. Since 2008, when the women's prison programme was launched, many of our dogs have been raised and trained by selected prisoners.
