Mentoring for Young People with Disabilities
'Linking Potential With Success...'
Check out we have recently been up to on Facebook www.facebook.com/carabinermentoring
A carabiner is a vital piece of equipment that provides support, confidence and guidance required for a Climber to reach the pinnacle of their mountain. Carabiner mentoring supports young people with disabilities to reach the pinnacle of their lives by acting as a Carabiner (or link) between young people with disabilities and adult mentors in their common area of interest. Carabiner links potential with success.
It is the vision of Carabiner to match young people aged between 17-24 years who demonstrate vision, passion and perserverance towards a specific goal with someone who has experience in the area that the young person is aspiring towards. This goal may be recreational, academic, social (gaining confidence) or in business. The mentor may or may not have a disability as the important link is the shared interest and the introduction to a new network that can support the young person with his or her dream.
What We Do
Carabiner and our Mentors create channels for the passage of information, advice, opportunities, challenges, and support with the ultimate achievement of goals and fun.
Through focusing on ability not disability we give young people with disabilites the support and guidance they need to achieve their dreams, have a sense of belonging and increase independence.
Process for Linking Potential with Success
-
One-on-one mentoring: youth are linked with an adult experienced in the field that they aspire toward
-
Workshops: providing youth with personal development which increases their confidence e.g. creating a C.V, preparing for a job interview, or overcoming the fear of public speaking
-
Experience days: introducing youth to activities that they may not have experience and that have the potential of becoming a hobby
-
News Letters: quarterly news letters are sent out to our members, supporters and friends, updating you on the latest to happen within Carabiner
Training: providing youth and mentors with the confidence that they will succeed with this opportunitu. Skills learnt in training can be used in many aspects of your life.
